The efficiency of simulated annealing algorithms and rapid chain delineation in establishing the best linkage order, when constructing genetic maps, was evaluated. Linkage refers to the phenomenon by which two or more genes, or even more molecular markers, can be present in the same chromosome or linkage group. In order to evaluate the capacity of algorithms, four F2 co-dominant populations, 50, 100, 200 and 1000 in size, were simulated. For each population, a genome with four linkage groups (100 cM) was generated. The linkage groups possessed 51, 21, 11 and 6 marks, respectively, and a corresponding distance of 2, 5, 10 and 20 cM between adjacent marks, thereby causing various degrees of saturation. For very saturated groups, with an adjacent distance... |

The objective of this work was to verify the existence of a lethal locus in a eucalyptus hybrid population, and to quantify the segregation distortion in the linkage group 3 of the Eucalyptus genome. A E. grandis x E. urophylla hybrid population, which segregates for rust resistance, was genotyped with 19 microsatellite markers belonging to linkage group 3 of the Eucalyptus genome. To quantify the segregation distortion, maximum likelihood (ML) models, specific to outbreeding populations, were used. These models consider the observed marker genotypes and the lethal locus viability as parameters. The ML solutions were obtained using the expectation‑maximization algorithm. A lethal locus in the linkage group 3 was verified and mapped, with high confidence,... |

Genetic linkage maps consist of ordering molecular markers across the genome and require a high number of markers for a good coverage of the genome. Such maps represent a framework which enables the identification and localisation of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) for traits of interest, such as growth or disease resistance, with the final aim of achieving genetic improvement through marker-assisted selection (MAS). Data on bivalves are scarce. No genetic map has yet been constructed in any mussel or flat oyster species. We report construction of a preliminary genetic linkage map in the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis (n=14). Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) markers were used in a mapping family containing 86 full-sibs issued from a controlled... |
